Chapter Fourteen
Three afternoons later, Willa was out walking the estate with the girls. They had gone to the stables after breakfast with the duke and visited each stall with his head groom since Lady Cecily was still interested in learning how to ride. Lady Lucy was still deciding whether or not she would take lessons with her sister. The groom recommended which horses the girls might use during their lessons, and they had gone to the pasture where the horses had been let out to stretch their legs.
âTheyâre awfully big,â Lady Lucy said.
âThey are,â she agreed. âBut riding is a good thing for a lady to know how to do. In the country, it is an easy way to get around and visit others. In London, you may have gentlemen ask you to ride in Hyde Park once you make your come-outs. Besides, animals are soothing to be around.â
âI think it would be fun to sit up so high and see the world on top of a horse,â Lady Cecily said dreamily.
âIâll think about it,â Lady Lucy finally said.
âYou can always change your mind about anything,â she told the girls. âWhile Lady Lucy isnât interested in the pianoforte now, she might be in a few years. The same is true for learning how to ride a horse. They may seem large and frightening now since you are only six years old, but in a few years when you are your sisterâs age, you may want to learn how to do so. It is the same with anything you choose to study. As you mature, your interests might change and youâll want to explore new areas.â
A horse came up to the fence where they stood, and Willa stroked his long nose and then scratched the area between his ears.
âHe likes that,â Lady Cecily said. âWould you like to learn to ride with me, Miss Fennimore?â
âNo, my lady. I have no need to learn.â
âWhat if I want to ride about the country? I need someone with me, donât I?â
âIn that case, you may take a groom with you or your uncle would accompany you. Come, we should head back to the house. It will be teatime soon.â
The duke had asked they share tea with him each day, and Willa did not wish for them to be late. She was growing fond of being in Brockbankâs company. Too fond. She worried that if she could not curb her attraction that she might have to leave Spring Ridge for good. It would break her heart to walk away from these two, wonderful, curious, loving girls. Of all her charges, Lady Cecily and Lady Lucy were by far her favorites, even after so short a time in their company.
Perhaps she should try to reason with the duke again. She already saw him at breakfast each morning. Then at tea. Once again at dinner when they supped together in the winter parlor, an intimate room that lent itself to shared confidences. If she cut back on
